The interview is held to assess if the candidate satisfies the following:-

1) The right Attitude for the job

2) necessary Qualifications

3) Any previous relevant experience

4) whether the candidate is a self starter or needs to be told

5) whether the candidate can meet the job requirements

7) Salary offered and salary expected

8) readiness to join duty

9) smartness

the interview is not just to test general knowledge of the candidate . It is to find out whether the candidate can meet the job requirements and has relevant experience. Other things are all for comparison with the other candidates, and ekliminating the unwanted and for selecting the right candidate. The selection process have some weightage for the no. of vacancies at present /near future.

answer for personal introduction qus depands on the kind of interview u are facing:
for public sector:
ans must be very descriptive which covers all the info about ur personal life regarding ur education,family background and all
for private org :
it must be very very specific only about one or two sentences they dont want ur history they intention is only to start the interview with the qus u r at ease
ans may be for an it job:
myself or i m
i have done
my main areas are
hope i ans ur qus
