You never said whether his attitude is affecting his job or the companies business. Some people have personal views that are not to peoples liking (gay, racist etc). but if they keep it professional and out of the business it shouldnt be a problem. Your company could be the reciever of lawsuits, he either needs to keep it professional or he should be warned and terminated if he is creating a problem.

If you fire him because he's "racist", you'll probably isolate him more and he'll become more racist.
The word racist is used too liberally these days anyway, and by the way you're asking, I don't think he's a real racist (I've met those, very dangerous people who would not make good managers).
What exactly does he do that is "racist"? Without knowing that, I couldn't judge. But from what I read I'd say no.

Unless you have policies in place that specifically outlaw racist behavior (such as: having a diversity initiative or hostile workplace policies), you can't fire him for being a racist. The exception is if his behavior negatively affects your business--and even then, you have to have documentation of several instances, to show a pattern. If he is a manager, however, and can make hiring /firing/promotion decisions, he could be opening your company up to a lawsuit if his racist views interfere with his responsibilities. The bottom line: you can't discipline him AT ALL without documentation.

Racism is not condoned almost globally in all the countries. My advice is that the person must be talked to and counseled. If no improvement is seen, he must be fired. Keeping him will be ultimately harmful tothe company, therecpould e legal cases and the company may have to close. Then where will be the jobs anyway?

Keep him, it's hard enough to find someone who is good at their job.....
Soon there could be a law against discrimination against racists....it's a belief or point of view, extreem and cruel as it might be, as long as he does not translate his views as physical violence he has every right to believe in his racist views.
Just don't let him push his views on you or the other members of staff.

I do believe that you need to discuss this with him first before you can fire him and give him a chance to change his behavior. You need to document him and let him know that racism will not be tolerated and if he does it again he will be fired. If he continues this behavior and you don't do anything about it, someone may sue you. Chances are he won't change his behavior and you will be able to fire him. If you want to avoid paying unemployment, make sure you have documentation to support your decision.

Need more info...
How racist is he? Are they his personal beliefs about a group that he has disclosed to you, or does he openly speak to/treat people a certain way?
One of the most important qualities of a manager is how you treat people...

If he's good at what he does keep him.
Big deal if he is a racist. Many people are.
Would you fire someone because they only have one hand?

Well, if his racism is interferring with how he does his job than that is an issue.
Speak to an employment lawyer to make sure as you wouldn't want to be hauled into court over this.

He needs sensitivity training. If it doesn't work you should fire him. Racisim hurts people and people should be able to go to work without having to be hurt by racisim.
