Windows XP occupies aprox 2 Gb by default usually.. If it came installed with other software, like antivirus, media players... there you have it!

When you format the drive it uses some of the space to store the boot sector and partition information. Hard drives always appear a little smaller than the max. size. That's normal.
It also depends on what factor is being used to describe the size. My 400GB drive capacity is either read as 400,077,586,432 bytes or 372GB. The claimed size is unformatted.
If it gets to the point where the extra space is needed, it's time to get a larger drive anyway.

windows always show less space because the manufacturer and Microsoft do not measure the space in the same way. one uses imperial and the other uses standard measurement. OK HAVE A NICE DAY

IBM thinkpad has inbulit restore feauture which occupies 2GB or more and OS occupies 1GB+.
Hence it's showing 56.6GB.Nothing to worry

default it takes some storage space for booting and other application ..for windows xp or any operating system....u can't cover that space....
if u install another application like ms-office....,media player ...flash players..and so on it will so less space in u r laptop .....
