How many inches is the thread supposed to be to start a friendship bracelet?

Depends on the length of the bracelet, the type of material, and the pattern. The ones I make, the thread is usually a yard... I make bracelets out of hemp and embroidery floss... Always add extra length too just in case you might run out.

It depends on the type and width of the bracelet. I typically just did the length of my arm.
