we are a gay couple, and our first time out was a complete disaster, there was lots and lots of silence :(

You know, I figure if there is a lot of silence, then it's not going to be a relationship you want to be apart of. If neither of you had anything to say, then that either means your days were very boring, you're too closed off to start talking about your past, or you just weren't meant to be together. Talk about work, vehicles, hobbies, pet, parents, siblings, the food, the movie, the drinks, favorite bars, first kisses, college, clothing....anything you can think of. Don't let the conversation run dry, and if you're both just quiet people, well then, learn to speak up, or learn to be satisfied in the abyss of bordem.

It's no different to a straight couple. If you have nothing to say to each other then you just didn't hit it off. When you're out with someone you're interested in, there won't be any silences!

I would suspect that you could talk about the same things a heterosexual couple talks about or a couple of friends talk about. I see no reason why you couldn't just enjoy where ever you went like everyone else.
