I think perhaps God went ahead and gave him a belly button just so he wouldn't feel like a freak. There is no reason to believe God wouldn't have. After all he gave men an appendix and we have never needed that have we?

No because he wasn't born the way we were, with umbilical cords attaching us to our mothers. He was made by God. And that goes for Eve too, because she was molded from Adam's rib.
