i didn't see anything in the film that suggested your conclusion. the rat on the balcony, to me, was just part of the whole theme of rats. what i did notice about the film is that everybody who was a rat was killed, which would support the idea that wahlberg was not a rat, and thus survived.

i was hoping that as wahlberg was walking out he would have the brown envelope in his pocket or something, but he didn't.

I do not agree - it's an interesting theory but I just saw it going back to that old "no cop killer ever REALLY gets away with it" thing...

I think wahlberg wore the little booties and stuff so as not to leave evidence - making it easier for his cop buddies to close the case for lack of evidence.

What would wahlberg have to gain from killing Damon? It would not benefit him since no one would have known he was a rat... it only would have benefitted Wahlberg to kill Damon if Wahlberg was a REAL cop who was trying to get back on the force and do justice.
Otherwise he is just increasing his odds of getting found out by being there.

I think you are thinking to much into it. Stop listening to your husband. I have to agree with lazrus281 who answered the question correctly.
