For the past 17 or so years, since the Internet Boom of cyberspace techonology has come into our society, the term "smart house" has been somewhat a buzz word.

It's the dream of many futurists--inculding Microsoft billionaire baron Bill Gates--to soon build homes where many of it's maintenance tasks can be done by computer set timers or fully (real time) via homeowner remote control....anywhere either locally or world wide.

Say....you live in a "smart home", and are across country either on vacation or on business. Using your wireless or internet cable connected laptop in your room, you log on direct (via 'secure' connection) to a "Task Menu" that runs your home!

From there, you can check successful on/off operation of your home security system, check any phone voicemail, see live or playback recorded video of select rooms in your home from very small well hidden cams, program on/off times for lights in any room of your home (giving it that 'occupied' look to anyone passing by), controlling the AC or heat systems....even remote control outside lawn sprinkler systems or that whiz bang cool automatic dog feeder device as well.

Sounds cool, doesn't it? Why hasn't "smart homes" really caught on? We ALREADY have the techonology savvy to build such. Actually, there are some smart homes now in existance, owned by the wealthy who can afford the building costs of the time; the price today is fast approaching affordable.

But....here's another thought: If YOU can remotely run your home via PC or laptop.....then it's plausible ANYONE (like....say.....BIG BROTHER, maybe???) else can "hack in" and have access to your home as well. That makes me feel somewhat uneasy, but is a real possibility.

Maybe it's a smart homeowner who doesn't yet rush in and retro-fit his/her home into a smart house.
