love is...well...depends on where you are in relationships at the moment, if you are...
...with your family then love is unconditional, meaning you show how you love them without judgement, accepting who they are with no question or pause...
...with your friends then it is mutual coz there is acceptance and likeness, coz there is sharing of everything but with a choice of keeping or letting go...
...with your girlfriend love is in experiment, anything goes...
...with lovers love is lusty...
...with someone you harbour feelings like you love being with her, around her, over her, above her, behind her, without thinking too much of where she comes from, race, age, fat, thin, sexy, nice teeth or no teeth, hairy or top-gone, and yet you still want to smootch and kiss all over and make love with her or have sex with her even without shower and all, there's acceptance and understanding then that's love...did i help?

i only understand the bold portion of your question...
love is an ultimate virtue. if you acquire all the rest of the virtues, you will love... the following are examples of virtues which make up a person's character: honesty, patience, faithfulness, loyalty, selflessness, kindness, thoughtfulness, respectful, committed, forgiving, etc.
and love brings happiness :) btw, it isn't simple work. eg, just imagine you gotta learn to be patient when you're naturally impatient... or you gotta learn to be honest when you always seem to lie...
hope you get the point and hope i answered well :D
