I am a chinese student here in sydney, unfortunately, I couldn't follow the accent sometimes when local people speaks, I like western people, they are open-minded, friendly, warm, I'd like make friends with them, but communication is big problem to me, sometimes I cant understand their joke, and do not know how to respond, does anyone know how to get used to the accent? haha, and I have to claim that chinese are not blunt naturally, coz we always couldn't understand the western cultrue and language clearly

You just have to keep talking and listening, there is no quick way, but over time you will begin to have more understanding of the accent. Good Luck.

It is difficult to pick up a language when there are a lot of slang words and phrases that don't really mean what they literally say. Probably the best thing for you to do when you don't understand a joke is to laughing say "That went right over the top of my head". That is a joking way of saying that you didn't get the joke.
An alternative to this is to wait until you are with a fairly close friend who was there and ask him or her what the joke meant.
The little language quirks will slowly disappear as you are around people with that accent.
