ok this is the question
"Camille has no more than $20.00 to spend each week for lunch and the bus far lunch costs $3.00 each day and bus far is $0.75 each ride write an equation for this situation. Can she by lunch 5 times and ride the the bus 8 times in one week?"

any help with this would be great, but it would be even better if some one could take a little bit of time to tell me how i do it so i'm not so lost
thanx

she has 20.oo
lunch is 3.oo x 5 times a week = 15.00
she now has 5.00 left for the bus

the bus is .75
she can take it 8 times a week
8 x .75 = 6.00 not enough money left

7 x .75 = 5.25 still not enough money left

6 x .75 = 4.50 ahhhhh this works!

she can only ride the bus 6 times a week.

YOU are using the method of reduction by multiply the amount of money it costs to ride the bus, and subtracting it from the total of the 15.00 that it costs to eat lunch 5 x 3.00 a week from the 20.00

spending a total of 19.50 having 50 cents left over.

im me if you need more help

let b= number of bus rides
let l= number of bought lunches

let t=total cost for the week

first off, make sure you know your limit, she can spend no more than 20$, so if your t value becomes more than 20, then Camille will not be able to buy the amount of things you specified

t=3l +.75b (because it's 3$ per lunch, and 0.75$ per bus ride)
plug in your values
t=3(5) +.75(8)
t= 15 + 6
t=21, but t cannot be greater than 20, so Camille cannot do the specified things in the problem.

The key to solve these problems is to define a variable and give it a name. Then you turn the words into equations

So in this case, let x be the amount she spends.
L the # of lunches
B the # of bus rides

x = 3 L + .75 B.

(Simple enough?) Now they want to know what she would spend if L = 5 and B = 8 and if that is in her budget.
