I don't think there is an ideal age. It depends on each individual. There is a lot of planning and soul searching involved in transitioning. It should not be entered into lightly. Each person is going to be ready in their own time frame.

From female to male it is actually much easier to pass than male to female, so age is much less a factor. The best age is the age that you feel this is what you have to do, people have done it in their 70s and 80s, the median age is above 30, I think it is near 45.
Being 30 isn't really all that old you know, less than one half of the average human life. The body will still be very receptive to hormones, especially testosterone. The age of the person doesn't matter, the only thing that does is their belief that this is what will make them happy. I wish your friend the best, and hope that you will help him be who he is.

I've known a few TG's, both directions. I am told that it's best to make the transition before the age of 25 - something about the bones being able to readjust. However, I've known people to transition at ages ranging from 16 to 65. If this is what you want, then move forward with it. I've never heard anyone say they wish they'd waited longer.

The ideal age is when YOU are ready for it. if you want it, do it. There's no advantage to doing it younger/older as far as physical health goes. The same risks/benefits apply at any age. As far as passing, sometimes its easier if you start younger, but that mainly applies to mtfs not ftms. The biggest thing to consider is your mental health, and that generally decides when someone transitions- if you're trans, at some point you just can't live in the wrong body any longer, and you have to make that change or you'll not want to live.

I don't have an answer for this question.. but I do have an opinion/advice. What is wrong with being who you were born to be? Having your penis mutilated to resemble a vagina does not make you a woman. Ergo it will not solve your problems, the daemons you face day to day will be there all the same and you will have to look each day in the mirror and see a mask, of the person you would like to be but can never be. Don't get me wrong, I know quite a few trans-gender people and they are all very nice and well meaning, but not one of them have ever struck me as happy or well adjusted. Just running... from themselves. My advice would be to tell your friend to seek counseling and face themselves and embrace themselves for who they are. A person, unique and wonderful, each person born is a tribute to life's struggle to survive on this planet don't sully that with an overtly cosmetic surgery that is as unnecessary as it is painful.

If it is to benefit you as a person, go for it at any age. Everyone deserves to be happy and feel whole as a person.

As soon as possible is best. If someone can delay puberty until they reach 16 through certain medications, they can start hormone treatments. That way their body develops to match their gender identity through puberty.
