I am ignorant of this technology. I would like to have a simple system working with my laptop. Have Internet use --secure information would be taken care of through the wired system...what would be useful?

There are Linksys, Netgear, Buffalo to name a few. Check out their websites for tips on securing your wireless network. Also wired doesn't mean secure so don't bet on your data being secure just cause you are going through a cable and not over the air. Use encryption, turn off broadcast, use MAC filtering, use a firewall. For strong passwords use complete sentences and pick out the first letter of each word, use at least 1 capital letter and throw in a number somewhere in the middle.

Any router would be suitable, especially if you're not doing any hardcore gaming However, if you're unsure about how to set up a router, Linksys has a free 24 hour tech support line, something other companies don't have.
