I've noticed a lot of recurring themes in his movies (young protagonists, especially women, environmental conservation, etc.), but are there things he does stylistically/ cinematographically? In terms of how he treats his characters, for example.

i find when watching his movies that the situations are usually the same. like the similarities between Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away.
i've noticed like you mentioned how he favors female protagonists of the youthful nature like in Totoro, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke....
personally i love all his films for the artwork. especially in Howl's Moving Castle, Castle in the Sky, and Princess Mononoke. i love how detailed everything is. its all so beautiful. Castle in the Sky used to be my favorite but Howl's Moving Castle took its place.

Hiyao Miyazaki directed one of my favorite animated movies (Japanese or not) of all time: Princess Mononoke.

Great great movie...Billy Crudup, Claire Daines, and Billy Bob Thornton did a really good job in the voice acting department plus it's just a great movie overall.

But yeah, there are recurring environmental themes, maybe he practices Shinto; Princess Mononoke did seem to be heavily influenced by old Japanese lore and the Shinto belief.

Along with the recurring themes, I think there are similarities in how he treats all of his characters.
