I realized when I answered another question that my point of view on this might be the "unpopular" one...

Two sides:

1) You may prefer to hire people with a good military record because you support the people who defend our freedom and can follow orders and be productive on the job.

2) You may prefer to hire people who never served or were even discharged because you like the psychology of people who do not fight as a general rule. Maybe you would be worried to have a person with authoritarian ideals working at your place of business and want a relaxed work environment without strong political opinions being thrown around.

I can understand both of these arguements - what's your opinion?

Serving our country has nothing to do with being a good employee. I've hired ex-military that were phenomenal, and ex-military that were down right scoundrels and night mares to manage. There is way more than two sides to the argument. I think you would find any manager is willing to hire a person who is capable of doing the job even if they have 6 eyes and 4 arms, regardless of their military status.

My priority is to my company - not my applicant. Can the applicant do the job? Is their military training a benefit or a hindrance (yes, in certain positions, certain backgrounds are not a match)? Does the applicants attitude fit the culture of my company?

Military people come across very dynamic in interviews. But almost any manager will tell you, they are either a rising star or a black hole, and there is no in between.

Oh yeah, and I am a military brat. Raised hanging out with fighter pilots, navigators, boom operators, etc. It's not personal, it's realistic.

A lot of businesses like hiring military because they have a tendency to work hard, take direction well and take fewer days off. Of course, one thing to look for when hiring prior military is how long they were in and what rank they left at. If they didn't make rank very well, that could indicate that they were not good workers. Also, keep in mind that not all military are "fighters". Everyone is trained to use a weapon and fight when needed, but there are many whose jobs are accountants, lawyers, doctors, dental assistants, etc. Even the soldiers that are infantry soldiers are trained to only fight when their life is in danger. A lot of soldiers (not necessarily the young, new soldiers) have more self control after serving in the military.

1-Most military occupations are technical and don't involve combat
2-Hiring ex-military personell has historically been a very good business practice, as the military tries hard to teach discipline, honesty, and a strong work ethic.
3-Hiring ex-military personell is also another way of rewarding those who have been willing to defend this country's freedoms.
