Well my doc tells me that I have an averted knee cap (???) and I'm gonna need surgery to get my kneecap back in place, but I've never gone under the knife before and I'm scared :( . I don't know what the techincal term is for that (I think it's averted blah blah blah) but I know that the muscle holding my kneecap in place has snapped off so that my kneecap is dangling... Can any doctors or people who've undergone surgery tell me what it's like?

with the knee , unless it will take quite a long time, they did give me a shot in the lower part of my spine, my legs were totally without feeling but i could still talk to the doctors, they did arthriscopic surgery on me, and then sent me back to a room to get my feeling back and then a nurse and my husband shoveled me into the car, my knee really hurt like crazy for a few days but it got better. if they have to put you under all the way, its simply you count from ten to about 6 and then you are out, and everything is totally black bliss , no sense of time passing or anything, and they will wake you up, they might keep you over night if they do this kind of anethesia. either way they will give you pills to take when you are at home for several days, to help with the pain. ive had cancer surgery, a baby, two tubal ligations, an abortion and knee surgery, as well as oral surgery too. its nothing to worry about, im still kicking.

I am sorry about your ilness. Going under the knife can be quite scarey, especially when the docters talk about complications and risks. However, i have never had knee surgery as yet but i have undergone two surgies in one year. First it was a emergency surgery for my gall bladder. Thankfully because of the pain medications and the rush of it I didn't have time to be too scared.
The second surgery was for a bad thyroid. Now that had me a bit worried. They were going to cut my neck from side to side. I tryed to get rid of my nearvousness by makeing a joke of it, that the docters were going to give me an italian neck tie.
But honestly both surgeries were a peice of cake. They put me in a room and had me dress in a gown. Soon they gave me some kind of sleepy drug. During the second surgery because it was a holiday my husband was allowed to go with me to right outside the Or doors. I tell you the truth the medicene kicked in pretty quick and all i could think of why don't you shut up so I can go to sleep. When i got into the ER the docter said he was going to put me under and I thought "finally I can sleep!" and that was the last thought.
Surgery is the easier part. Recovery is a bit harder. Just remember to say your prayers. Don't worry they have wonderful pain meds, and listen to the Nurses' advice. Most of them really know what they are doing.
I hope this helps and I will be praying for you.

I've been through surgery many times for different things. But what they do is knock you out and then you wake up the next day...usually. But its all over, there is nothing to worry about the technology and everything the doctors know about this time. Don't worry the only thing thats gunna be a big pain is Physical Therapy. Surgery in the knees is nothing to fret about.

Here's some pro's
1. You won't die from it
2. Technology
3. The doctors are way more advanced than before
4. Its sugery on the knee not the heart or something

So just keep calm.

And if you are religious(like me)
Pray to the lord and ask him to give you the energy to help you through this.

But no lie...Its nothing to worry about.

Hope this helps :)

If you have any questions send me a message alright.

I don't think it's anything to be scared of. I've had a sugery and it was not painful at all. They administer anaesthesia into your system and the next moment you are knocked out. You won't feel a thing and when you wake up you will be treated and of your illness. Just like that! :)

BTW, I would like to mention that a lot of people travel overseas these days to countires like India, Singapore, Thailand, Mexico, etc. for their knee surgeries as it's a lot cheaper over there because the cost of labor in those countries is much less as compared to the US/UK. The quality of hospitals in these countires and services offered meets or exceeds US/UK standards so there is no compromise. I know a friend who didn't have insurance and who had her hip replaced in India. She saved almost 75% of what she was quoted in the US. That covered not just the surgery but also the physiotherapy following the surgery, her travel, hospital stay, hotel stay, etc.

Check out Healthbase at http://www.healthbase.com. My friend used their service to connect to a hospital in India for her surgery. They might be able to help you as well. They have a lot of resources online you might find useful. You can even apply for a medical loan through their website.

I've had to get surgery for a very serious knee surgery. It was nothing. I was really scared at first because that was my first surgery. But when it's over with, you will realize it's nothing. I would not worry about it. The doctors know what they are doing.

Patellar ligament tear in your case may be the result of trauma or accident to your knee, may or may not have fracture. Your Orthosurgeon will not advised you to undergo repair unless deemed necessary. Consent form will be given to you. If you are below the legal age, to your parents to undergo such operation. Your Surgeon im sure discuss to you the pros and cons of the operation, the after effects and period of healing. Parental counselling is also encourage. You don't have to be scared since doctor's knows best. You will have an anesthesia after all so as not to feel pain.

I have had several surgeries. The fear before it happens is the worst part of it all. And it is a silly fear. Just a fear of the unknown. The pain is manageable in most cases. The healing takes place as you go on living your life, and the corrected condition will improve your quality of life in the long run, making it all worthwhile.

Hon I am a nurse. Your doctor knows what he is doing.
You can't walk without your knee cap fixed. People have surgery all the time. You will do fine. The doctors and nurses will be happy to walk you though this....literally and figuratively.

Trust your doctor. He went to many many years of schooling to learn to do surgery.

The price of knee surgery is very low in India as compared to USA, UK and Canada. My cousin also got her hip replacement surgery in India through the forerunners healthcare .She is more than very happy with the results. She is totally pain free now. She just paid 25% of the amount she was quoted in USA and is all praise for this forerunners healthcare company.

Forerunners Healthcare is very famous in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and magazines. I have read a lot of their patient stories also. They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low price, as all joint surgery is not covered by insurance in USA or by NHS in the UK. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that your surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

Hope this helps.

I live among many Senior Citizens and lots of them have
Knee and Hip Surgery. Most have replacements and
recover nicely. These Seniors are in their 80's and
early 90's. Surgeons are very good and they will take care
of you. Not to worry.
