In 1976 the USSR banned the use of all microwave ovens and published decades of safety research to the world through a level of sharing that was very uncomon for them.

In a 1989 issue of the medical journal, The Lancet, researchers published findings that microwaving milk turned a key amino acid into a toxin that is poisonous to both the brain and kidney cells. Their warning was that microwaving baby milk and formula was a public health hazzard and should be a concern to anyone.

There are decades of American research pointing to the very unhealthful effects of using a microwave for any kind of cooking. It even has negative effects on water. It can break down nutrient content and turn healthy protein structures into very dangerous compounds. Much of this research has been published in peer-reviewed medical research journals.

The FDA even published a list of raised acrylamide levels in foods when they've been microwaved. Acrylamides are a suspected carcinogen that also appear in fried foods. Amazingly enough steaming doesn't produce acrylamides in food, even though microwave ovens do.

So why aren't microwaves banned in the US?

Money--not only would the economy be affected by the loss of sales of a major appliance, but if a major applaince maker admitted to any of this, they could be held legally accountable. That can lead to huge lawsuits, especially if cancer is suspected to be involved.

Think of how tobacco companies denied their products were unsafe for decades. They even worked to hide the research.

Many people think microwaves are fine because they have never done any research of actual published data showing direct effects in lab settings as well as public health analysis settings. The hard data is available, but if you like to use your microwave because it's conventient, would you want to admit it might be harming you?

Again, this would be similar to how smokers can continue to smoke when they know of its harm: they put it out of their mind because acknowledging it would be more stressful.

Once again, this is based on peer-reviewed information published in academic journals.

There are some who say that the vibrations of the molecules in the heating process changes the molecular structure of the food enough to render it unrecognizable by the body making it indigestible.

Microwave cooking changes the molecular structure of food. In test subjects who ate microwaved food, the following changes in blood chemistry were observed:

Decrease in hemoglobin values
Decrease in HDL Cholesterol (the good kind)
Decrease in lymphocytes and leukocytes (white blood cells, the ones that kill germs)
Increase in luminous power by luminous bacteria exposed to blood of volunteers (in essence, radioactive energy was passed on from the microwaved food to the blood cells of those who ate the food)

In other words, the implications are that a person who eats microwaved food for an extended period could become anemic due to destruction of hemoglobin, have an increase in heart disease from the decrease in good cholesteral and the ratio between good and bad cholesterol, and could become subject to a host of contagious diseases due to immune system compromise.

It has also been discovered that when microwaved, molecules are torn apart and deformed. These cells become extremely vulnerable to viruses, fungi, and other micro-organisms. These cells' ability to repair themselves is suppressed so that rather than producing water and carbon dioxide in the process of cell repair, hydrogen peroxide and carbon monoxide are produced. Can you imagine eating food filled with carbon monoxide? Can you imagine your own cells producing this compound?

When food is exposed to microwaves, the destruction and deformation of the molecules produces substances called radiolytic compounds, and the effects of these substances upon health is unknown.

I don't know about you, but I can do without microwaving just fine. The food tastes better and has a better texture. Our family has not missed having one at all.

As a side note, it was recently announced that all meat is now going to be irradiated, herbs and spices already are, and many fruits and vegetables are irradiated to give them a longer shelf life. Personally, we get our meat from a local farmer who grows it organically, or free range, and we buy our fruits and vegetables organically also to avoid the contamination of our foods by radiation. The texture and taste of such fruits and vegetables are much superior to the irradiated variety, and are much better for you.

The study I am referring to is admittedly a small study. However, if even ONE person has a decrease in health as a result of eating microwaved food, that's enough for me. I don't need 500 people to get sick to convince me. Also, it just makes sense: pumping radiation into food and then eating that food has to have an effect on the body.

If having a microwave in the home was a necessity, then perhaps I wouldn't feel so strongly. But it is totally a luxury, one we can do without, and to risk one's life for a luxury.....not me. You can install a convection oven which cooks almost as quickly as a microwave, without the possible dangers.

Some have said that you shouldn't believe everything you read on the net.....this study has been published in several sources off the net also. Besides, where it's published doesn't have any bearing on its truthfulness.

No Microwave cooking is not hazardous for your health.

The only problems is using plastic wrap over the dishes, or using soft plastic bowls in the microwave.

If you use the microwave safe dishes and paper towels; you will be fine.

As far as my knowledge microwave cooking is not hazardous to health and no conclusive scientific evidences are there to disprove this.

No provided if you use glassware or ceramic for cooking. Please do not use any kind of plastic even if written micro oven proof. This may be very harmful and may lead to cancer.
