I love the peole who simply say "take it to a mechanic"....

anyways, if you know about how much mileage you get to a tank of gas, you could just re-set the trip every time you fill up. You could test this buy topping off, setting the trip, and keeping a couple gallons of gas in a container with you. Let the car run out of gas and see how many miles it took for you to run out of gas. This way, you really don't need to fix it. In my opinion, it would be a waste of time and money. Unless you think you would have a hard time remembering the mileage. Oh and dont wait until it gets to the EXACT miles of when it ran out of gas.. Mileage is usually give or taking a few miles.

If it's been this way for a while, and never works anymore, ignore this post.

If it stopped working in the past few weeks or occasionally still works, it could be a gummed up sending unit and you have a small shot of getting it working again. Use either Chevron Techron concentrate (not the diluted additive), it will be around $8 a bottle, follow the directions on it. Or Marvel Mystery Oil. Both products have cleaning and lubricating properties that could get your floater working again.

Otherwise you have to decide if its worth $300 for a mechanic to drop the tank and replace the unit to you or not.

Well it could be the sending unit, gauge or wires. Check all the wires (easiest thing first) make sure you have continuity. and no breaks or shorts, worn spots rubbing the body, whatever. In the end I'd guess the main culprit is normally the sending unit which means you gotta drop the tank and replace it. P.I.T.A. ... I don't know how you could check the gauge other then to replace it ... barring you having a test bench. See what everyone else here thinks and good luck!

You have to check the voltage on the wire between the gauge and the tank. 12 volts all the time means the sender in the tank is bad, or the wire is disconnected. 0 volts means the gauge is bad or not getting power. It's usually just the wire falling off the sender when it says empty all the time.

Take it to a mechanic.

If you feel you are mechanically inclined get a Chiltons or Haynes manual, and fix it yourself.

If you cann't afford to fix it just top it off every 100 miles.

"Sending unit" is toasted, you have to drop the tank.
