As of right now the most played in tournaments have to be, Counter Strike 1.6, Quake III, Quake IV, Battlefield 2142, Enemy Territory, and Warcraft.

If you live in Texas and have ever attended LAN's, go to Quakecon. Sign ups may be over but you can be on the waiting list.
Popular games out now are those listed above as well as, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, Supreme Commander, FFXI, Counter Strike: Source, and about to be CnC: Tiberium Wars.

the only pc game that i know is very popular is world of warcraft. fits most ages and all different types of people play.

RTS: (real time strategy) supreme commander, command and conquer generals/red alert
RPG: (role playing) oblivion (offline) world of warcraft (online)
FPS: (first person shooter) counterstrike source, halflife, prey
