I had a patient come in with a broken arm...she had this purple stain all over her hand and when she was questioned about it, she said it was the lubrication she was using on her horse. Apparently she was using her hands to (I'm sorry, but there is no other way to put this) masterbate her horse. She said it was a stud and this was what you do to relax them (seriously, no joke here). Now, I spent some time in barns as a teenager and I have never heard of this. I know that they have a fancy frame that they use to collect semen from studs to sell for insemination. The frame was constructed in a way that the horse could mount it, but the lucky guy who got to collect the semen was on the other side of the frame and was heavily protected from actual contact to the horse. Studs can be dangerous to be around when they are "frisky"- hence the broken arm on the woman. What on earth would possess a woman to try to do it by hand? She said she did it all the time. Is this common practice?

I have been training and breeding horses for years and this in not normal behavior. When collecting a stud for artificial breeding, you don't use your hands for anything other than to hold the AV (artificial vagina). I have never met someone who actually thought masturbating their horse would make them relax. Most stallions are relaxed for a short period of time after breeding, but then get anxious and excited easily, especially when they are around things they associate with breeding (i.e. person who handles them for breeding, the area breeding takes place, etc.).

I did know a lady who used to do this every time she saw her stud. He was difficult to show and ride because he always had an erection when she was around. The sad thing is, that horse was never even used for breeding so he should have been gelded.

To collect semen from stud horses, although it's technically possible to masturbate a stallion to ejaculation, it's not always an easy process. For those unwary individuals who would attempt to use a bovine electro-ejaculator on a stallion, be prepared for an unpleasant response. Most stallions are vigorously opposed to any electrical stimulation and there's ample opportunity for injury to the horse and the technician, since complete restraint is difficult and muscle spasms are an unpleasant side effect. To that end, the artificial vagina (AV) has been the preferred means for the last 40-50 years. The first models, like the Mississippi model, were not very effective, but improvements have been made over time. Today, most farms use one of three basic types. In the U.S. the primary choices are the Missouri - USDA horse model or the pony model or the Colorado model or the less widely used Japanese model. All of these models have different manufacturers, each with their own modifications; but there are some farms still building their own AVs from materials found in hardware stores and plumbing shops.
The stallion's penis and abdominal area need to be clean; while some managers prefer to just use plain water, it doesn't remove accumulated dirt well. A few breeders use disposable gloves and a nearly pre-surgical level of sanitation to reduce the spread of disease.

I really don't know what the purple stain was, unless she had used gentian violet spray, usually used on injuries, as a disinfectant.

I don't care what she says it does for the horse - it's what it does for HER that causes her to pleasure the stud. Nobody is going to masturbate an animal for its own benefit, and this would be a dangerous habit because the stud would learn to equate pleasure with the person and could try to mount her - which could be why she has a broken arm. By the way- the person who said a horse can't be excited manually is wrong. I've seen them get erections when they are being bathed and the sheath cleaned.

NO this is not common.
The only time you are handling a stud in hand would be to wash his penis before breeding him.
Before he is bred he and the mare would be washed.
No one I have ever seen did any type of semen collection manuall with out the use of an AV.
Masterbating a stud would not calm the horse and once he learned that you were going to do that on a regular basis he would be excited every time he saw you.

Okay that is not normal.

Horses are not aroused in the same was as a human, and masturbating them would not have any affect.

They are only aroused by sight and smell of an in-season mare (or one coming into season).

You are 100% correct that the only way of collecting semen for the purpose of AI is by use of an artificial sheath, and an in-season (but usually desexed) mare, to get him excited enough to mount the desexed mare, or dummy mare, and ejaculate.

It sounds to me like this woman was "playing" with the horse for her own kinky pleasure, so she deserves the broken arm!
