I recently bought a 1985 chevy silverado from a guy who said it was all original. This truck is very very nice. To me it does look all original. He said he has never had any problems with it. After I purchased it I was about 1 hour away from his state and the truck started backfiring. Going up a hill it sounds like its backfiring under the hood. Going down hill it backfires fron the tail pipe. I made it home(7 hour drive) with out any other problems. I called him and asked him about it and he said it never did that to him. He said I probably but in "cheap gas". Well today I took it out for a cruise, and it was running fine till I hit about 47mph and it backfired under the hood so hard it sounded like the engine got ripped out. Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this. Will I ruin the truck if I keep driving it like this?
Sorry for the long post I just wanted to give details.
Thanks in advance.

could be multiple things. change the fuel filter in the carb first. if it is clogged the engine will run lean causing it to backfire throught the carb. then go to your timing. set timing at 8 degrees before top dead center. last but not least it could be a burnt valve but usually it will have a misfire in the cylinder.

considering its an 85 an supposed to be all original. the possibilities of a timing chain going out is good... something else to try just incase is a bottle of heat in the fuel tank, just incase it has water in the tank, since he seems to be blaming it on fuel. low octane fuel quality wont cause that type of back fire. it will however cause a ping. water on the other hand will cause a nice backfiring sensation. have the timeing checked at idle which should be about 10 degrees btdc and approximately 34-36degrees btdc at 3000 rpms when the advances kick in. if that is not within specs then your haveing a timing issue. hope this helps.
