They say you should have as many strategies in place as possible to make a small business work. If possible try and find 10 different strategies. For example:
- Advertise in the Yellow Pages
- Set up an web site with photo’s of your recent projects
- Get yourself some business cards and make sure you have a quality design for your logo. This will be used for your letterhead, website etc. Get it right the first time.
- Quality branding is very important. This will be used on your cards, back of your van etc.
- Setting up a stand at trade shows. This can be quite expensive, so maybe share a space with a complimentary business. Eg. Plant nursery, paver manufacturer.
- Keep a database of potential customers and follow up occasionally with all of them, no matter how painful this may seem. It might just be sending a group email showing off photos of your recent projects.
- By yourself the book ‘The E-Myth’. This is a great book for small business’ starting out. Really helps to get you motivated! http://www.e-myth.com/
Good luck mate, I hope you rake in the cash!!

As a customer who's looked for such companies--I would suggest the yellow pages--they are traditional.
Or the internet, and make sure that both Yahoo & Google can pick you up.
as well, if you're after the residential market--find out where the empty spots in the market are? For example, where I live--the companies don't really seem to have condo size (postage stamp size) yards down as a marketing plan.
Tons of places can do HUGe backyards or decks or waterfront properities but small patio design for under $3000. is an absolute lost idea to them.

i would say the back doors of your van.
when people advertise on the side of the van you always see it but never have time to really see it unless the vehicle is sitting still say in a parking lot.
when it's advertised on the back of the van, every time you sit at a red traffic light the person behind you can be entertained by your ad.

reverse phone number search compiles hundreds of millions of phone book records to help locate the owner's name, location, time zone, email and other public information.
Use a reverse phone lookup to:
Get the identity of an unknown caller.
Identify an area code.
Recall the name of a person whose number you wrote down.
Identify an unfamiliar phone number that shows up on your bill.
