In 1947, the Second World War had just ended. A devastated Europe was flooded with millions of Refugees, looking to rebuild their lives.

In Australia, the war had barely touched us physically. However, Australia had sacrificed 40,400 soldiers. The loss of manpower would be felt in a country that had to rebuild economically and socially from the ruins of the war. Australia had to either 'Populate or Perish'. Australia was also worried that without a large population, we would be unable to defend ourselves.

ITo help Australia rebuild after the war and to help rebuild Europe, the Australian government relaxed the restrictions to the Immigration Restriction Act of 1901 - which incorporated teh White Australia Policy. This allowed Australia to accept non-Europeans on business purposes, while also Australia accepted immigrants from those countries that Australia had been at war with. Between 1947 and 1951, 164,100 Refugees from Germany alone.

But Australia still maintained the White Australia Policy that allowed the Immigration department to actively discriminate against those of non-european backgrounds.

There is a wealth of information on the internet, especially from Government websites on immigration.

Many of the migrants to Australia in 1947 were people leaving the ravages of the war, looking for a better life, or misplaced persons, who could not, or would not be repatriated to their homeland. Thus the main pool was from cental Europe, the Mediteranian countries, (especially Greece and Italy,) and countries that had been taken over by the communist regeme of Russia.

Okay, here's the correct answer - but you have to decipher it!

Opening of doors important to let needed people in. People needed in Australia to work in factories with good skills. Not many Australians can work in factories. Government had to do something quick to correct the lack of skilled labor so help from outside Australia is welcome. New policy was adopted to let all kinds of people to Australia so economy will improve and advance.

I wish for your sake you will not copy this verbatim. It is correct but...........
