OK...honestly, this is kind of a tricky question. You're going to get a variety of answers from this one!
It all depends on what you grew up with, in my opinion. To me, the main characteristics of a good person is someone who values morals and who respects other people. To some of my "friends" it is someone who likes to do stuff they like to do. It all varies with other people.

Very simply, they live by the Golden Rule--do unto others as you would have them do unto you. You can't beat that as a standard by which to live your life, and it's easy to remember, can be applied to all situations and will earn you the love and respect of the right kind of people.
Those who don't live that way will try to take advantage of you, but they are fairly easy to spot. Just ask yourself, "Are they looking after my or their best interests?"

Someone who is truthful and honest. Someone who you feel comfortable around. Someone who you don't feel like you have to "put on a show" to impress. Along with that, possibly them being educated enough to hold a decent conversation with.
