My daughter is 3 months 1 week now and sometimes I wonder whether she has a hearing problem. She gets startled when she is sleeping and something falls and makes a bang or when her sister starts screaming. She also gurgles/make baby sounds alot, like when we talk to her and she replies back in her own baby talk. but sometimes she will be staring at something and I call her name but she doesn't turn her head. this worries me cause I start wondering whether she is hearing well. on the whole she seems fine - did anyone every have this problem?

I would talk to her pediatrician about this. It sounds like she hears but if she stares and doesn't turn her head it could be a petit seizure. My daughter has these and its something that should be ruled out ASAP. Also, use a bell on each side of her head at low rings to see if she turns to it. She may just have a hearing deficit in one ear. Good luck.

it is not really a hearing problem... Babies can hear very well, maybe even better than us because they haven't listened to loud, ear damaging music their whole lives. They get startled easily because they are not used to the sounds of the world. As for the not looking at you, it is just that she might not recognize the sound of your voice yet. The world is still exciting and new to her. Check and see if the pediatrician did a hearing test at birth. Most states i believe they have to within a few hours of the baby being born. If your baby has not had one and you are still worried ask about the test.

At 3 months, I wouldn't expect her to respond when her name was called. So, I wouldn't worry that she's not hearing you... she just isn't completely responsive yet. That'll happen soon.

As for the loud noises... babies often startle... they dream of falling, or loud noises startle them... because they're babies. Bundle them well, place a hand on her tummy if she startles while sleeping.. it'll make her feel secure and "nailed down"... and she'll get used to the screaming sister.

She's just 3 months... I wouldn't be concerned about any of this at this point.. sounds completely normal.

It takes time ...... Babies are innocent and it takes time to train them into becoming your slave.
