Hello there,
It really depends on how they are being fed. Bottle fed babies swallow a lot of air and will need to be burped pretty much until they are no longer infants, around 9 months or so. Breastfed babies on the other hand swallow so little air that the need to burp them is minimal. I would always rub their backs a bit when changing sides and sometimes there would be a little burp but most of the time they did not burp at all.
Like so many things it depends on whether or not you breastfeed.

*LOL* I patted my 18 year old daughter on the back while getting a hug the other day and she burped... *LOL* Brought back some great memories!!
I don't remember ever having a conscious awareness that they didn't need to be burped any more... They got to the age that they would finish their bottle and climb down off my lap to play... you know.. around 9 months or so... and that was that.

well my nephew is 6mos (he'll be 7mos on friday) and my mom said that we don't have to burp him anymore. I agree, after he is done drinking something (milk,juice,or water) if you just sit him up, he'll burp on his own. So i guess you can stop burping either when they are around 6-7mos, or when they start burping on their own.

there realy is no set age. If your child is still having dificulties burping on his/her own continue burping. When my son was about 5 months i no longer had to burp him. he would do it all on his own at that age.

When they stop sucking on bottles and breasts. When they start drinking from a cup they get a lot less air in their stomachs.
