There are many hidden meanings behind it, most notably and commonly found are non-conformity and narcotics use. However, you should try to interpret the movie to yourself (and waht a movie it is)\
When I watched that movie as a kid, it scared the hell outta me.

I don't think the meaning is really hidden.......Fame and drug addiction seem to go hand in hand for many artists.
