Topher Grace got the part of Eddie Brock in Spiderman 3 because they wanted a guy who could play both the character of Eddie Brock and then become the villain known as Venom. He is a decent actor and he's made a few movies. He possibly brings in a younger audience from his days on that 70's show.
Sam Raimi knows what he's doing.
What you should be more concerned with is who will take Tobey Maguire's place as Spiderman if they don't bring him back.

Sam Raimi personally chose Topher Grace to be Eddie Brock (Venom) and Thomas Haden Church as Sandman.
