There are 40,000 muscles in an elephant's trunk. Amazing isn't it?
The trunk is so sensitive that it can pick up a blade of grass or a peanut or hoist a 400 pound log.

The answer above is correct. The movements of the trunk are made possible by the action of 40,000 muscles...which of course are controlled by a highly developed brain.
