What bothers You? It is your life and you have to be sure of your relationship.
It is genuine friendship till it does not cross the limit either physically or mentally- once the cross limit has exceeded, no way you could continue as genuine friends. Think it off.
If you start brooding over thinking of the feelings of other person, you can't live in this world. At times we have to take hard decisions- moreso when we are in the cross roads not knowing which way to go.

Dear, think twice before taking any decision. Then explain your problems truely to him. If he has anything for you, he surely understand and always be your good friend. If not, no burden will be on you.
But, remember it is hard to get good and caring friend now a days.

first give him your genuine friendship. just saying that you will quit him is the sign of hurting a person who cared you when you were in need.
if he has mistaken your relationship is it not your duty to make him understand, with out him getting guilty?

If your asking if you break his heart will he still be your friend? Ill tell you the truth, no he will hate you and probably never speak to you again. Why would he want to have a friend who used him?

may be, he just wanted to impress you. If you share your feelings with the person and he responds positively, then you can see a ray of hope to continue otherwise it will be disastrous.

more humane to dump him to his face. give it to him straight. do u want him holding on for years wondering why u not writing back, and if you still care ? thats gonna do serious damage to him.
