Shredders are great if don't mind replacing them often or don't mind feeding a couple of pages at a time. Get a shredding service and they will do all the work for you. Some Goodwills offer shredding or you can use a pickup service like shipnshred.com.

You should be able to go to any copy & fax store and have them shred important documents for you. They may charge you a small fee, but in my past experience they've always done it for free. Just in case, make sure to take a few dollars (or whatever currency) with you to play it safe.
Also keep in mind you can go to pretty much any local retail store and buy a shredder for very little money. This way not only are you having the peace of mind knowing the documents are shredded, but you also ensure that only your eyes are seeing the paper before being shredded.

If I had documents that I wanted to be Absolutely Sure were shredded, I'd hop my happy butt into my car and go to Wal-Mart, pick up a shredder, go home, plug it in and have myself a shredding-good time. Worry free. Nobody sees the stuff, nobody reads the stuff, nobody copies the stuff first...
