Pl. go through the Deccan Chronicle supplement and you are sure to find a number of Hostels in and around Chennai.
You can also ask her to check on the availability of Paying Guest accommodation.

You have a CSI hostel near TVS sundaram, which is pretty decent but I am not sure of admission process.
Check out the ones near santhome church.
eg : Arpana Hostel
Bus frequency is also good.
My advice to you is check out for water problems and electricity restrictions before deciding
