when mauyan architecture is considered it has to be taken into account that mauryan architecture has evolved under mauryas. At first the Mauryas had patronised the architecture which was influenced mainly by Hinduism and they also had influences from the greco-roman style since the influence came from Chandra Gupta Maurya's connections with greeks through his marriage to the daughter of Seleucus.

however gradually this changed and the later architecture was influenced by Ashoka the great embracing buddhism and patronising buddhist architecture building viharas, stupas, monasteries, mountain caves for monks, engravings, statues of buddha to spread buddhism

the architecture still surviving consists mainly of those built by Ashoka so considering today's scenario it will be handy to conclude that mauryan architecture has a major influence from Buddhism.
