I am trying to learn to speed read, but the book I am reading is not very helpfull. It explains that you should not say the words in your head and that you should read with your eyes, but it doesn't go on to explain how to do that.

This was an easy 'a' in college. I read in diagonal stripes, downward. When I read the local paper, I really have to sift through the crap. Just train your eyes to skim and highlight the topic.

Speed reading or skimming or fast reading you can use a fingers on the words and your eyes.

For example what you asked do not read all the words:

"trying learn speed read, book reading not helpful. Explains not say words read your eyes, doesn't explain how."

It worked for me when I was reading manuscripts for publishers. At the beginning I read every single word and that was very slow (100 - 200 words a minute) and eventually I was reading 1,000 words in a minute.

Speed reading has nothing to do with skimming words or skipping small words. Speed reading involves training your eyes and brain to see faster and to register what you have read faster.
I don't know which book you are using, but there are methods you can use to practice reading faster, and rememberwhatyou've read. One that I used was at a J.C. reading lab. A machine similar to a micro-fiche reader wirh a timer device forces you to "see" faster". If you want to learn correctly, try asking teachers who specialize in teaching reading methods.
By the way, saying words to yourself, or aloud does slow down the reading process. This is because it actually takes longer to
subvocalize words as you read, than to see the word and have your brain recognize it. The brain can recognize things that the eyes see for less than a third of a second.

Reading with your eyes is basically skimming. You move along the line in the direction the text goes, and follow the next line, like you're really taking the time to read, but you only notice the big words or those that seem out of place. Just do it a few times and your eyes will eventually get used to picking out the quality words to understand a text.
