I'm going to be getting some sugar gliders in a few weeks and I was wandering if anyone knew how well they get along with ferrets. I have two ferrets, male and female, one is uber crazy hyper and will attack anything that moves and the other is gentle and won't even touch my hamsters(I put them in the same cage for an hour and they slept next to each other). Should I always keep my sugar gliders seperate from my crazy little ferret or will supervised play be fine. I'm not sure how fragile a sugar glider is and if the ferret did by chance playfully attack the sugar glider would it be ok?

I talked to the people at the pet shop where I bought my ferrets and am getting my gliders and they said that they would be fine as long as you supervised them. I'm looking for answers from people who have owned both and know how they will interact if you were just to introduce the two. I don't ever leave my pets unsupervised unless they are sleeping in their cage which is in my room. I'm not worried about a sneak attack.

I am going to keep them in seperate cages I just want to know if you can introduce them to each other in a safe way that will not put the glider in any harm. Like when I introduced my hamsters to my ferrets someone else held the hamster while I held the ferret and I let them smell each other and then we held them closer to see how they would interact and they were fine. I just want to know if doing the same thing with the gliders would be ok.

Gliders can be pretty savage as well. I know of someone who put Californian Quail (a larger quail) into the bottom of a Glider aviary. One quail was dead the next morning, and the other was severely plucked. I have also heard of them attacking smaller birds. One case in particular the Gliders got loose one night and chewed the legs off of several canaries. Size-wise the ferret would have a big advantage. It could be very problematic. That said, my cat and my birds get along well, and I never have to worry that the cat is going to hurt my birds. They are allowed loose in the house together everyday. The point is, you know your ferrets. Get to know your new Gliders. Then only you can make an educated decision as to whether it would be safe for them to interact..

Sugar gliders bones are VERY delicate, and they can also be agressive towards other creatures. I have cats and sugar gliders - I let them touch noses, and the glider almost nipped the cats nose. Even if they get along great, with a ferret being so much larger and a glider so fragile even a friendly jesture could be harmful. An accidental scratch from the glider could cause an automatic response from the ferret to bite back (completely instinctual, not meant for harm)... I just wouldn't take the chance personally.

I read a story about a lady who had dogs and sugar gliders. One dog just loved to sit and watch the gliders play, and were often in the same room and allowed to visit each other. The dog had nothing but good intentions, but as the glider lept into the air the dog instinctually caught it in its mouth mid air (you spend 8 years being taught to catch things flying at you, it becomes a reflex!). Glider was unharmed, but the owner didn't allow them playtime anymore...

My mother has 7 ferrets and 2 sugar gliders. They are Kept in separate rooms. Ferrets natural prey are small animals... The sugar gliders would make a yummy meal. My mom doesn't let the ferrets out if the sugar gliders are out and vice versa. It helps that the sugar gliders only come out at night. I would not risk the supervised play especial with the hyper one. Just because nothing has happened with the hamster does not mean they won't go after the glider. Sugar gliders are fragile.

Sugar gliders habitat is in Indonesia, New Guinea, New Zealand and Australia. They are little gliding opossums, and are about the size of a rat/hamster, and live in hollows of trees, and forage for food in the early evening. They eat insects and fruits etc. they have a soft fur, and a really soft under belly.

The bite from a ferret can and does hurt, and one bite to the sugar glider could be fatal. And as the ferret is a carnivore, the sugar glider may end up being dinner. I would not have the ferret or sugar glider housed together, I would be more inclined to keep them apart.

I hope this info helps, and I have included a few links for you.

I have a pair of sugar gliders. I've had them for a little over 5 years. Don't put them in with a ferret if you want them to live. They are very fragile creatures. Don't evenput them in with your hampsters. If the ferret were to playfully attack the sugar glider it would more than likely die. If you are going to play with your sugar gliders make sure that all the other animals are in their cages.

One bite from the ferret to the neck of a sugar glider and the glider is history. Don't take a chance by leaving the sugar glider unattended or leaving the ferret unattended either because ferrets will hunt other animals.

Sugar Gliders are rather fragile creatures in stature and dietary needs I wouldn't mix the two.

My sister has ferets and cockatiels. One of her cockatiels got killed by one of the ferrets once. It jumps up and snatched the bird and broke it's neck.

Your ferrets WILL kill the sugar gliders. If you get them, please do not put the 2 animals together. That would be a costly mistake.
