You have several very good sources available to you. For instance if you were planning to teach in Florida, you could go to

http://www.fldoe.org/edcert/

This a site for Florida Dept. of education and spells out all the qualifications needed for professional certification to teach in the state of Florida. So check your state dept. of education. In Florida, we have the regular 4yr. college path that will give a teacher candidate the needed college credit hrs. needed as well as the knowledge base needed to teach and to pass the 3 test for certification in the area the candidate is interested in. The other program is a very intense 11month course for those who all ready hold a bachelor degree. This site also list the knowledge that the candidate will be tested on. You can and should talk to a representative off a teaching program near you. They will have first hand knowledge of the courses you will be required to teach in whatever area you chose. Good Luck!

It is best to check in the state that you plan on teaching in. Every state has a Department of Education and you can usually find their web site in a search. For college majors I would choose Liberal Studies (Elementary Education) or Early Childhood Development. Good luck!

Most people either get some ECE (Early Childhood Education) credits, Montesori training, or a degree in Education.
