It is a nice gesture. Something simple like a dozen cookies is fine, along with a warm smile and a friendly hello.

" In the day " it was the polite thing to do. It makes a new person / family feel welcome. It allows for you and them to get a chance to know each other and shows you are the good neighbor. It also allows for that snoopy old lady peeking out her window to get the gossip first hand :)

But, sadly, dont expect it any more. People are scared to meet others now, who knows what awaits them behind that door.

It is a nice gesture of welcome & shows you care,it need not be something expensive or elaborate,something home cooked or the result of your talent or hobby will do,frehly baked box of cookies,a potted herb , bunch of garden flowers are things that come to mind.
