Why do so many people refer to McDonalds as "MacDonalds?"?

Why do so many people call McDonalds "MacDonalds?" They not only pronounce it that way but they spell it that way as well, so I know it's not just an accent or slip of the tongue. I've known a lot of people that call it that. But I remember in high school, my English teacher spelled it that way on the board.

So someone explain to me why these people call it "MacDonalds," when anyone with at least a 1st grade education can look at the sign at the local fast food restaurant and see it's not spelled that way. They can also listen to a McDonald's commercial and see no one pronounces it that way. C'mon, I know there's some people on here that pronounces it that way, so explain why you do it.

Despite the countless McDonalds commercials that pronounce it the correct way, and the numerous billboards and other ads that spell it the right way, many people choose to stick to their ignorant habits.

If you don't believe me, I'm pretty sure you can do a search here on Yahoo Answers for "MacDonalds" and you'll see plenty of results.

Bethy, it's not "just slang." Don't compare it to "MickeyD's" because that's just a short and "hip" way to say it -- and people saying it are well aware that it's not the official name. People that say "MacDonalds" actually think it's spelled and pronounced that way. Big difference.

It's common for people to get angry when they are corrected or exposed to the truth that they've been blinded from for a while -- when people correct me and show me the right way, I thank them for lifting me from that veil of ignorance -- I don't get mad.

Maybe some people think it is macdonalds, unless you are really into the place then I think a lot of people dont pay that much attention....or the other reason might be because of the Big Mac sandwich, maybe it makes them think MACdonalds?

Here's a question: Why is everyone so afraid of the truth? Black people seem to have real problems with basic English. They put the S's in all the wrong places and say "IT''S" in place of "THERE'S" ("IT'S" a lot of people in here"). How many hundreds of years will it take for these mrons to learn to speak?

Well both Mc and Mac are scots/irish for "son of" (Mcdonald and MacDonald both mean son of Donald) and many people seem to think they are interchangeable, I have heard many Mcs and Macs correct people. Some people just don't care but will be mad as a wet hen if someone said their name wrong.

the answer is quite simple. mcdonalds is the name of the fast-food chain in america, but in canada it is called macdonalds. for the chain to establish a foot-hold in our neighbor of the north they had to set up a new division.

a new divison that would be run my american managers whose work force would be made up of canadians. the american managers hold all of the precious secrets of the mcdonalds industry, if these treasures fell into the wrong hands (perhaps canadian) the ronald mcdonald empire could face a terminal existance.
the new "macdonald" divison allows the mcdonald mother divison to run it and keep all of their secrets. the candians make the burgers.....but they dont know why they are so tasty.

the name trickled down from new england and has stuck in certain places of the states.

lemme axe you sumptin.... everybody knows who and they speak that way. Same as my dog that can be understood trying to speak. Actually my dog may speak better than the people that say lemme axe you sumptin about mac donal's. The dog is more evolved than the other humans that still cannot speak or read.

Hello Diverse, I have never really notice how they spelled McDonald's,until now. I am one of those people who says MacDonald's. I am way far from being stupid. Good question!

People sometimes just don't realize what they are doing and if you are surrounded by people who say it the same way you do you probably wouldn't figure out you are saying it wrong till you pointed it out to them.

Maybe it has something to do with the Eddie Murphy movie 'Coming to America' where there was a restaurant called MacDonalds (I think that's what it was called).
