The stone just keeps turning and the inside of the lighter - the one with the instructions on it - just keeps slipping out.

Any suggestions other than sending it to Bradford?

The end of the spring has a metal tit that is supposed to push the flint into the thumbwheel. If the lighter has gotten wet, the flint disintegrates inside the spring tube and clogs it. Clean the tube with a piece of wire or stiff fishline, and put in a fresh flint.
lf the lighter gets hit or compressed suddenly, the outside springs back and the inside stays compressed. This causes it to slip out easily. You can try spreading the inside body of the lighter slightly, front to back (thinnest dimension). If that doesn't tighten it up, it's factory time. The good part is , unless it's beaten up so bad it's unrecognizable, those nice Zippo folk will still fix it free.

Sending it back is the way to go. I have sent two of them back so far, and they come with new insides and repaired outsides. They even threw in extra flints and a penny. I was very pleased with the service and turn around was fairly fast and it was free. You can get the address at zippo's web site.
