Back support is due to YOU because you raised him during the time the father was not paying. Who does your son think paid for his clothes, food, housing etc. when daddy wasn't providing for him? I am getting back support for two kids ages 20 and 21 and they understand that mom worked two jobs to support them when no one else was around. He's just paying me back for the money he was suppose to be paying but didn't. Child support is not meant to be "allowance" money or guilt money for not being there. If your son wants daddy's help with his current expenses, tell him to ask daddy for it.

Child support is there so that the costs of raising a child isn't placed solely on the custodial parent. Unless your son has paid for all of his clothes, school supplies, sports fees, daycare, etc., then the money is yours since you paid for all the costs that came with raising him.

However, in the name of peace, if you are financially set, there could be a case for giving some of the money to your son so that you won't have any hurt feelings on his part.

When I say give him some of the money if you're able too -- I'm being a devil's advocate here (if you're getting tired of hearing him whine about the money). Personally, I don't think he has a right to a single penny (see my first paragraph).

Did you put clothes on his back, food on the table, a roof over his head, electricity for his PlayStation and stereo. Didn't you spend 9 months of your life carrying him. Go out spend some of that money on a backbone and tell the child to GO GET A JOB!! That is how I made money when I was 18. I bought my own car, insurance, gas, oil, and clothes when I was eighteen. Not that my parents wouldn't have helped me if I needed it, they just instilled a work ethic and gave me an understanding of the value of money.

You get the money because it is "back payments" for when he was legally not an adult and you paid out of your own pocket; it is reimbursement for that money in which you spent on him (your son). Maybe you should charge him for all the stuff you did for him since he was born! Tell him that he'd better get a job to pay you all that back pay plus interest!!!

No! It is reimbursement for money you already spent on his support. He doesn't have any legal or moral claim on any of it. In fact, if he is still at home, he owes you for his present support.

If your son still lives with you or you are ppaying for his college, then give him a percentage of it monthly...discuss it with him and agree on an amount, that way he feels like he has a say and you are listening to his requests.

did he pay the bills while he lived with you? did he buy his own cloths, shoes, and food? did he pay the light bill, water bills, and medical expenses?
If the answer is no than that should be a good enough reason.....that money should go to you!

Tell him if you never have to lend him or give him another penny the rest of his life, then he can have some of it and I bet he change his mind. Good luck
