I know that there are two slots, so I think it would work. Right now I'm about to get a 1gb ram dell inspiron from ebay, so I am wondering if I could use one of the 512 chips sets provided with another 1gb set to total 1.5gb. Then I could later sell the extra 512 memory set.

No. The inspiron 1501 can only have a total of 1gb, with a max of 512 in each slot.

Both links below (one from Dell) confirm that 1GB is the max memory.

READ YOUR MOTHERBOARD USERS GUIDE!

DO not buy RAM unless your computer specifications give you the right RAM type and model number!

You can mess your system up seriously!

Check your Owner's manual..... SOME cmputer motherboards do NOT allow mixed sizes of memory but MOST do allow it.
