It's part of an Evil Atheist Conspiracy to brainwash people into having homosexual trysts. Three, in a row, of the same kind, with hug-and-kiss sexual overtones is NO co-incidence.
Or, perhaps those symbols are convenient markers, and only later were given the meaning hugs and kisses.

I'm pretty sure it's not hugs and kisses, those associations got tied to those letters from some other place.
