If it was definitely only a simple blown head gasket, the guy would replace it and make a whole lot more money on the car. You'd have better odds at the track.

Have you ever done any work on a car before? If the engine is the DOHC 4-cylinder then it's a big job to get the head off and replace the gasket. If it's the pushrod V6 then it'll be easier to get the heads off, but there will be two of them. In either event just changing the head gasket may not solve your problem if the head or block is warped, and there's no way to tell until you get the thing apart. My advice is to find a car that runs properly.

To poster below: I'm replacing the head on my 1966 Fiat right now! Yay Fiat!

If the head isn't warped or damages from the blow out it should be really cheap. The last head gasket I replaced myself was about $150, but that was for a 1972 Fiat. Parts on a Pontiac are alot cheaper. The liquid seal that you asked about is crap and its messy, really really messy.

If you buy it and put it on yourself, with parts, probably less than 100 bucks.......but be really careful on this purchase. You probably don't know who you're buying from, and the car could have a cracked head,or a bad block. If you aren't absolutely, positively sure it's only a head gasket, I'd sure as hell back off.
