I like the people who claim the war was about state's rights and not slavery.

The states rights in dispute was the southern states' right to keep slaves.
So,the south went to war to protect their right to hold others in bondage.

It seems it was about slavery.

I am only answering this again because of the person above me.

Lincoln ran on a platfom of anti-slavery and South Carolina said it would secede right away if he got elected and they did.

The South was about slavery and I like to joke that the only thing the South did right in the war was to lose the war!!! lol It's true!

But seriously, not everyone from the South was stupid, so

1) Southerns who are idiots stop it and
2) People from the North who could possibly think that EVERY SINGLE PERSON FROM THE SOUTH is stupid stop it

Y'all stop pissing me off! I am from the South and I am for gay marriage and I believe in evolution and all that! Enough with pigeonholing people! If you do that, then you are being just as discriminatory!!

And, hey masterjac... poster who is a couple of posters above me. I am glad that the South is in the Union and that there are no slaves. If so many lives were not lost, then slaves would not be free now. You seem black as by your avatar. Are you not glad there are no slaves? I am glad there are no slaves and that I live in the U.S. and have rights as I am a woman and certainly would not had the South not lost.

P.S. Joe - If you can ever get to the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, TN, at the Lorraine Motel (sight of MLK, Jr. assassination), then you should. I stood at the spot by where he was shot at and cried like a baby. It is a very moving experience. They have a KKK outfit - white thing with the hood - there and it made my blood boil just looking at it. I just cannot understand people sometimes, and it makes me sick to think what black people had to go through in the past. And what some people around the world are going through right now.

If you want to know what part of the "Taliban" is so tempting why don't you ask the busloads of Yankees that keep moving here day after day. Yankees don't need to fix things in my backyard, they need to fix things in their own backyard before the last one out turns off all the lights.

The things wrong with the South are the same things wrong with East, North, and West.
If the Rebel flag offends you, read a History book.
The American Civil war was about States rights vs. Federal power.
Abraham Lincoln's Proclamation of Emancipation only freed slaves in the Southern states, not the Border states, or Northern states. He only did so after the war had been raging for three years. It was a calculated ploy to destroy the South's economy, and shorten the war. It was NEVER about the slaves, until Northern Congressmen tried to force counting slaves as 3/8 of a person in the national Census for apportionment.

It's so funny when southerners try to defend their backward way of life. lol

Especially when they say the civil war wasn't about slavery but states rights. Sure it was states rights the southern states right to have slaves.

Even though most of the those dirt farmer southerns were too poor to own a slave and barely lived better than slaves did, they went and died in droves for rich southern planters who didn't give a crap if those poor stupid inbred suckers lived or died.

Now modern southerners somehow feel an affinity for a past that was corrupt and based on a corrupt way of life and call themselves good Christians in the same breath.

It's absolutely incredible. It's a wonder that so many lives were sacrificed to keep the south in the Union in the first place. We should have just let the French and English have them and deal with them.

What is wrong with the North?

Hippies, organized crime, uncontrolled gang violence... not to mention the odor...

Hey look a tree.

Lets not forget that it was the South that made it to the moon.
"Houston, we have a problem"

I can keep going....

And I guess I have to....

To the poster below me: Correlation does not imply causation... thats just psyc 101. Don't worry, you'll learn it in college.

The biggest problem facing the south right now is that the citizens as a whole are too fat.

"someone who thinks the South went to the moon!!"
.... Again, Kenedy Space Center is located in Florida and the Johnson Space Center is in Houston, Texas. I am an engineer that was born in Houston, worked for two engineering firms. Do I need to further debunk your stereo type of the South?

You also might want to look at comparative population growth rates between the North and the South these days....

where does the confederate flag fit in with problems? I guess you are one of those "highly educated northerners" who think the civil war was about slavery, and not about states rights.

Before you spew your ignorance, learn a bit about the history of the civil war. Then come back and apologize for insulting one of our nations flags.

If it wern't for the confederate flag, you wouldn't have half the rights you have now.

Just because some racist morons in white hoods fly the flag, does not mean the flag represents them. Now go back to your black panther party blame whitey for your problems.

It is sad to see some of the comments to my answer, claiming slavery was the cause of the civil war.

The south wanted to seceed from the union because of unfair taxing of industry. The north was more industrialized, while the south was mostly agriculture. The tax structure was set up to reward the industries more and tax the agriculturers heavily.

Not only did lincoln own slaves, but the slave owners were a huge minority of the population. Are you all so naive to think that everyone wanted to defend the rights of a few rich people to own slaves? Or do you think maybe that the freeing of the slaves had something to do with the recruitment of more troops for the north? Incedentally, slaves in the south were treated better than free blacks in the north

the war started in 1861, when were the slaves freed? 1863!!!! Explain that one!

I wish I would have seen this link before I typed all that, it sums it up better than I did:

Born & raised in the South. Lived in the "North" for 39 years. Got me some friggin retirement from up there and they have to mail it every month to a Southern bank.
I think I was smart enough to buy a tank of gas, get a road map, go up north and bring back some of the Confederate dollars that went missing, and while I was up there, I taught a whole lot of Y'all to eat fried okra and black eyed peas, and everyone of you loved it!

Gee, joe.

I think you need to get out of the 1960's and get into the 21st Century.

It's not like that, anymore.

The war is over. The South accepts it, but it shouldn't be asked to hang its head in shame, ridiculed, disrespected, and dishonored because of it. That's just poor sportsmanship.
