Because 1 is the rare number. If you are first you are the only one who is better than all the competitors. If there is one of something than that item is precious. Just because it's the lowest number (which it's not 0, -1, -2...) doesn't mean that being alone is a bad thing.

highest rank maybe because one stands alone.. one is by itself. it is it. it doesnt need anyone to accompany it. doesnt need any other #s to support it. its good enough. its powerful. it's simply THE one.
