The vehicle is a 1995 Nissan Pathfinder. The speedometer will sit at 0 when you start driving, then move up to somewhere between 0-5mph or 0-10mph. Then it will jump to 30mph and if the vehicle is driven for an extended time - sometimes the speedometer will give an accurate reading. Or at least one that seems accurate. What could be causing this dancing speedometer?

Thanks!

Hi there !

That is a very common problem to Nissan's from 93 to 96.

I have seen what you are describing many , many times.
The speedometer will work erratic or not at all while the odometer keeps on going or both will not work.

The speedometer is run electrically.(i do not mean digital!)

The main Integrated Chip on the speedometers circuit board has gone bad. This causes erratic or no operation of the speedometer/odometer.There is no way to repair the problem. You must get a new or used speedometer.

My local pick n pull junkyard will sell me a speedometer for $20.00 for that vehicle in San Jose California.(the dealership wants $180.00 brand new.)

If i set the mileage on the used speedometer and removed and installed on your vehicle ; i would charge you $120.00 for that vehicle. it would take me about 90 minutes to do the job.

I hope that helps. Good Luck!

The 95 pathfinder has an electronic speedometer. ( no cable). The problem lies in the VSS. ( vehicle speed sensor). It is located at the rear of the transmission tail section on the driver's side. There is a connector attached to it with 2 wires. Just remove the hold down bolt beside it and pull it out. The new one just slides in after you exchange the drive gear between the old and new unit.

This sounds like the classic plugged up catalytic convertor. Many city driven exclusively cars/trucks suffer this fate every 5-10 years from not having sufficient exhaust flow or velocity to get the cat convertor hot enough to burn off the oil and gasoline residues that build up and it creates sufficient back pressure on the engine to stall it after the engine has warmed up or run for a little while. AN easy test is to pull one of the O2 sensors after it stalls (red hot so watch out) and then crank the engine and if it continues to run (exhaust will escape through the hole where the O2 sensor was) then you will know it's the cat convertor. Good Luck!

The tip of you speedometer cable could be wearing down or it could be your speedometer gear in your transmission. You may have to replace one or the other.
