Well, because most people have no lives of their own. They are lazy and want to live vicariously through others. Or they are too sorry to follow their dreams and put forth the effort, so they bash celebrities.
Another thing is that so many Americans and people from other nations are so obsessed with the weight of models. Why not look at people who who they are, what they do, their character, and their accomplishments rather than being obsessed with their weight or lack thereof?

Because Americans are so LAZY that they do not want to read the paper, play some sports, or even go as far as to look outside, they would rather sit in front of their TVs and push a few buttons to see Anna Nichole Smiths fat stinking 1 month old corpse get dragged by the poor souls in a o-so-delicately woven pink blanket, (pink was her favorite color you know? And she was so brave for being a whore). Heaven forbid they find out how their own family is doing because they cannot watch it on the TV while eating cheese curls and slurping down go-gurt (WTF is go-gurt anyway, and who the hell thought it was a good idea?)

Following the lives of others with such passion is just a way of avoiding the emptiness of their own lives, so to speak.
And its not all Americans, thank you. Its some Americans. I'm an American and lord knows I dont follow any of "Brangelina's" stories or anything like that.

Escapism. Most people's lives are tedious and boring, watching celebrities exciting lives helps them escape.
As for me, I actually LIKE my boring an tedious life and don't follow celebrities.

I don't get it either and I'm an American. I don't think we'll ever know what drives the crazy bastards to care so much about famous people.
