Yes handball (team handball) is a sport and has been a regular part of the Olympics since 1972 (1976 for the women). In USA the sport is unknown and were not very good , so it's not like NBC is going to to make this prime time viewing.

Just back in January 2007 Germany hosted the world handball championships top nations included #1 Germany #2 Poland #3 Denmark #4 France #5Croatia #6 Russia #7 Spain #8 Iceland #9 Slovenia #10 Hungary #11 Tunisia #12 Czech Republic (out of 20 national teams that qualified) So as you can see the game is played throughout most of Europe, North Africa, South Korea and a little bit in South America and the Middle East.

In the areas of the world where handball is popular there's professional leagues- players get paid. This sport gets TV and advertisement revenue overseas. Remember just because a sport isn't played in the USA or is popular it's still a sport.

You are thinking of the tennis ball, bounce the ball in the square variety. Handball, sometimes referred to as "European Handball" is an Olympic sport and has rather a large following in Europe. It is similar to Football ("Soccer"), but is played with the hands instead of feet.

Yes, I think its more popular in Europe. If I remember correctly, the Dallas Mavericks' Dirk Nowitzki's father was a proffesional handball player, and was disapointed his son chose basketball over handball.
