I was just wondering if anyone out there has stopped taking the pill and lost weight because of it? I know that sometimes being on the pill can make you gain weight, as it did for me. I've been on the pill for about 2 1/2 years and I'm wondering what other side effects I might have if I stop taking it?

I'm not sexually active, so there's not much point in being on the pill anyway. Besides, since I've been on it so long I feel like I should give my body a "break" from it. SHOULD you do that if you've been on it a long time?

Please don't tell me to go ask my gyno, if I wanted to do that, I would have and I wouldn't have made this post... Thanks :)

The side effects depend on what pill you are taking. They all have some, and different pills have different side effects.

To find out the specific side effects of your pill, you should be able to find the information at the pills manufacturer's website. Or you could try an online medical reference site like webmd.com

The 'weight gain' that people get from taking the pill is not weight as such but generally water retention.. so I would be willing to bet this is the case with you and now that you have stopped taking it the fluid that you were 'holding' is going away.. this being your weight loss.

It is always recommended that you take a break every 2 years.. so I have heard. And I can not imagine any side effects as such as you are not doing anything! When you were taking the pill you were putting something into your body so side effects may be there, but now that you are not doing anything you are not going to have any side effects as suh, just general activity that would normally happen in people. So you could expect things like a heavier or painful period (not everyone!), irregular period, and of course if you have sex - babies!

Well, the pill changes your hormonal balance so it is possible it could cause some weight gain but 35 lbs seems a bit excessive to attribute to the Pill. I'd investigate other lifestyle changes that could have caused this - like people in a happy stable relationship will often put on weight because they're all happy and relaxed and snugged up with their partner. Have you become less active or changed your eating habits over the last 6 months to a year?

I think it depends on the person and what brand the birth control is. I have some friends that gained 10 pounds just on the the pill alone. Others did gain weight, but lost it after being on the pill for 3 months. Others never gained anything. So I guess it depends on what type of birth you are on. As well as your natural body chemistry.

The doses of estrogen in the pills nowadays are so low that the body does not need a break - they are safe to take for many years, like about 10. If you think you have side effects, weight gain or other, you can probably switch to a different pill.

I gained weight and for a brief time my face broke out. Other than that, nothing. I felt a break was necessary also, although my GYN said it wasn't really necessary. If you are not sexually active, there would be no harm in taking a break. Besides it will save you some money, unless you are fortunate enough to have insurance that will pay for it.

Yes, you will lose the weight back. A good way to think of it is that the pill (and especially depo shots) gives you a low dose of the hormones related to the ones you get before your period. When you are on the pill you are slightly more irratble overall, and you get bloated, lose sex drive. Its like constantly having a slight case of pms.

When you stop, your hormones return back to normal eventually. You will be in an overall better mood, and your sex drive will increase.

Ironic huh

Definitely you will lose some weight. How much depends on the prescription you are currently using.
