Just an FYI not all walmarts are getting rid of their fish departments. Some stores do take care of their fish and like any retailer it is unfortunately a MONEY making thing.
I have spoken to many Walmart managers with regards to their fish. At the walmarts who don't care, the manager basically told me they are a high profit commodity and they will continue to sell them. They have what he calls "guarantee" on their fish (yep 1-3 days with receipt).
Other general or regional manager were more concerned and have either fixed the problem or are on the list to not sell fish.
Only one of our walmarts is no longer going to carry fish. I did see an improvement in the Oh store however. Cleaner not overstocked tanks. They have even pulled the fish bowls off the shelves.
The problem isn't just with Walmart. I have been to many fish stores around the country. Ignorant keepers are to blame. They think because they have one or two tanks they know all there is to know about fish and fish keeping.
I was at PetSmart just yesterday and a fellow was asking one of the young workers there about a problem with his fish he purchased just a few days before from them. (It had what sounded like ich). She promptly told him do a 75% water change and everything will be ok.
Needless to say I followed the man (felt like a stocker) and explained what could be wrong with his tank. It was nice to know he thanked me up one isle and down the other and I helped him choose what seemed like the best medicine for his tank.
I am willing to ban walmarts that don't care for their fish, however I am in applause to those who have changed their ways. I still discourage anyone from buying fish from walmart when ever possiable. I haven't purchased one for longer than I can remember.....ok that isn't true, I bought a Koi (about 3 years ago beautiful color), it was miss labeled (as usual) and I got a 7" koi for $1.99. Thought I was being smart. It died three days later of course.

At my wal mart the fish are fine! Maybe if you really cared you would have brought it to the attention of the store manager, and then tell him you were contacting the local news. But i kind of doubt you are an expert on caring for fish? And what expression was on the fish that made you determine the fish were unhappy? I've never seen a fish that had any resemblence of a sad or happy face! What needs to be done is you tree huggers need to quit exaggerating on putting animals on a human level. You have NO CLUE in what the fish are thinking or going through. Fish in a tank serve one purpose, human self graification and entertainment. You feed the fish, you change the water, and than do something really stupid, TALK TO IT! lol.....What a joke.

I agree. I dont support purchasing fish at Wal Mart. Even more so, I do not support anyone that buys a guinea pig from Petco or PetsMart. They do not take care of their piggies there. I have personally witnessed severely ill pigs that were out and available for purchase, despite their conditions. Furthermore, they mix sick animals with healthy ones, which spreads disease and causes more problems for all the animals in the same cage/area.

It is my understanding that Wal-Mart is phasing out their fish departments, based largely on sales losses, which come from people refusing to buy their fish, but also based on the outcry of the people. But, that said, yes, the only way to effect change is to speak out. There is a group called Wal-Mart Watch who speaks out on all of the negligent things Wal-Mart is doing. From employee discrimination to environmental pollution. A large national group is a good organization to join forces with. Here is their contact info.

I am sorry but my girlfriend works in the pet department at wal-mart and she cares for her fish. She cleans the tanks all the time. I just want to know which one you went to? They are not all the same you know.

Wal-mart is getting out of the fish business in most of their stores already. The best way to fight this is by voting with your wallet. They are in business to make money, not lose it.

im from australia, so never seen a walmart, i've never seen a grocery store that keeps live fish, but i've seen some pretty sad looking fish at pet stores.
I think places that keep animals (pet stores) should have audit type things done to make sure their animals are being looked after.
i personally wouldn't buy an animal from a pet store. i prefer breeders at leat you know that they have been loved and cared for.

You are too late. Walmart is slowly beginning to phase out fish. Many stores already have stopped selling fish altogether. More are following. Good thinking, but don't worry, Walmart is fixing thier problem.

They should be banned from selling fish. I agree. Hopefully the chain outgrows itself & disappears.
